Design for manufacture

Manufacturing is more of a craft than it is science.

After having seen it linked on Hacker News, I’ve been following Spencer Wright‘s adventures in additive manufacturing (more specifically powder bed fusion in titanium);

The following quote from the second article should be burned into the brain of every every designer and manager!

“Designing for manufacturing requires an intimate knowledge of the manufacturing process.” — Spencer Wright

What surprised me is that people seem to think otherwise.

Another interesting point from the second article is the huge amount of manual finishing that such parts require.
